Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania -- Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn today announced a Grand Jury Preservation Award has been presented to Washington Crossing Historic Park in Bucks County.
“The buildings at Washington Crossing Historic Park represent some of the most culturally and historically relevant buildings on state parks lands,”
Dunn said. “This project has been years in the making and we are excited to see it honored with such a prestigious award.”
The Preservation Society of Greater Philadelphia presented the award on June 5 for the preservation and repair of 18th and 19th century historic structures at Washington Crossing Historic Park.
The project represents an $8.7 million capital investment in these historic structures to ensure their longevity for the next generation.
There were 17 historic structures preserved or improved through this project, including:
- The McConkey Ferry Inn
- The location from which George Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776
- The Thompson-Neely House, which is on grounds that the Continental Army camped on prior to crossing the Delaware at McConkey’s Ferry.
Other buildings include houses and outbuildings from the early 19th century hamlet of Taylorsville, Pennsylvania.
Some 20th century park buildings, such as picnic pavilions, were repaired as well.
Much of the project was planned and developed with the Pennsylvanian Historical and Museum Commission.
The project work was primarily to build exteriors utilizing contractors who specialize in historic structure preservation methods.
These contractors focused on a wide array of areas including roofs, masonry, chimney repair, window and door repair, painting, and basement waterproofing.
Project partners included Armor Masonry Restoration; Preservation Design Partnership; Keast and Hood; WMG Historic Restoration; and Wu and Associates.
“The preservation and improvement of these buildings adds tremendous value to the visitor experience at Washington Crossing Historic Park,”
State Parks Director John Hallas said. “We are truly thankful for all of the partners and contractors who worked to make this happen, and grateful for the recognition from the Preservation Society of Greater Philadelphia.”
